Prologue
I don’t know where to start but my perfect life is over! Such a lack of manners... I am Igor Cintra, nice to meet you. I am a Med student in the best university in the country - full time, unfortunately. Currently, I live in a student residence near the university with my great friends Cláudio, Vagner and Daniel.
Cláudio is tall and brunette, you know, I am not going to describe a man. He goes to Med school with me but he has a scholarship, you know the story... The rich family wanted him to follow his father’s business, he refused to do it, took the university entrance test and now he is here with me and with our muses: Helena Menezes and Lucia Souza.
Vagner is the ugliest in the group. He is short and, currently, is a little bit overweight probably because he stays in front of the computer all day. He studies Computer Games.
Daniel is the most studious one. He is doing a major in Math; I don’t know how he can do it but... He is blond, skinny, blue-eyed, I know... I am jealous too.
The girls worth mentioning are our muses. Cláudio, despite being a womanizer and hanging around with half the girls in the university, loves crazy Lucia, who apparently loves him too but won’t admit it.
Lu is an average height, blond, green-eyed girl with curly and long hair. She is very beautiful and intelligent but won’t beat my beloved Helena.
Lena is the prettiest girl I have ever met and I have met a lot of girls. She is perfect: her dark and wavy hair contrast her lovely pale skin, she is short and sweet despite she hates me and she is not sweet with me. She is the most intelligent woman I know after my mom, of course. Lena also has a scholarship and for that she likes studying a lot.
But letting introductions aside, I am here to tell you the best and worst thing of my life, not necessarily in this order.
As everybody in this student residence knows, I am madly in love with Lena but she never accepted any of my invitations, not even for an ice cream in the corner shop. I’ve know crazy Lena since the Nursing school we went to but that doesn’t matter now.
The important thing is that Cláudio, who is always messing around there with me, had a brilliant idea that has changed my life.
I know I should not trust Cláudios’s crazy plans but since Daniel though it would be a good idea also, I have decided to get in this crazy story and try my last chance to win Helena’s heart.
Who knows she stops seeing me as a spoiled kid and starts seeing the man? We are in the first year in Med school. I am twenty years old but Helena still sees the same sixteen-year old boy she met in Nursing school; the proud girl won’t admit that I have changed.
Chapter I
– What’s wrong with you, pal? – Cláudio asked me as soon as he left the shower and saw me lying in bed.
Rooms are shared between two people here in the residence.
- Do you really need to ask, Cláudio? – I asked very annoyed. My world had collapsed that night and no one cared.
– I’ve told you, you only lost the bet because you wanted to! – he answered shrugging.
– Because I wanted?! – I screamed outraged. – It was the last thing I wanted.
– So leave your whining behind and forget about this stupid bet. Go there and say your usual ‘good morning, sunshine’ – advised me the old dog.
– And broke my promise? – I asked still not believing he had proposed that. – If I did it, I am sure she would never trust me again.
– If that is so, be happy to have her in your arms for one night – Cláudio answered also annoyed. – Go and talk to her, Igor. Try to be happy... We all know she loves you. What’s the problem in pushing a bit more? – he asked already calming down after a long sigh. – Think about that, pal. At least talk to her... – he suggested before leaving the room.
The scenes from the previous night would invade my mind all the time. I had to find a way out for all of that. Soon, I remembered of the days before the party.
Some days before...
– What’s that, Lena? – I’ve listened Cláudio asking her when I was going down the dorm stairs.
– Halloween’s party will be in a week from now and only those legal of age will be allowed – my sunshine answered while finishing putting the ad in the wall we had made in the room.
– Alcoholic beverages? – Vagner asked already getting excited with the idea.
– I don’t know... – Lena answered shrugging.
– I hope there’s a lot of beer – joked Lucia.
– Lu, darling, why don’t you join me for the party? – asked Cláudio as soon as the poor one shut her mouth.
– Because I intend to go with someone more attractive – she explained winking an eye to her friend that smiled in return.
– Impossible! Don’t waste your time looking for someone more attractive than Cláudio here – answered Cláudio himself with his flirtatious smile.
– No more lies, Cláudio... Igor there is quite more charming than you are. This face as long as a fiddle you have is not my type – Lu argued back winking at Lena again.
I didn’t understand the exchange of glances between the girls and I was happy to laugh of Cláudios silly face.
– That dork? More handsome than me? You still haven’t woken up, Lu. I understand you are sleepy and saying nonsense – he affirmed in disregard, looking at the watch marking seven ten in the morning.
– How many times do I have to ask you not to call me that way? – I asked snorting in rage.
– I think he will never be convinced – my love said between laughs.
– This will go a long way still. – Daniel said discouraged.
– Sunshine, I have... – I started.
– It’s Menezes! – she corrected me, annoyed. I don’t know where Lena learned that people should call one another by their last names when they don’t know each other enough. And I don’t know why she insists I don’t know her enough I’ve known her for about four years. If that doesn’t allow me to call her for her first name at least, I don’t know what would allow me to do so.
– Sunshine... – I insisted because I love to annoy her. She gets even more beautiful.
– Menezes! – she said once again.
– Lena... – I tried again.
– Menezes! – she won’t give up.
– Lena... – I was already losing patience.
– Menezes! – she said rolling her eyes, tired.
– Snowy... – I tried once again. I will not surrender.
– Menezes! – she answered even more annoyed.
– Invite her to the party soon, thi
s conversation is getting on my nerves! – asked Cláudio, interrupting my next nickname.
– This way there is no romance, Cláudio! – I complained joking.
– What romance, Cintra? There was already no romance... Not to mention I have already accepted an invitation – she announced with scorn calling me by my last name once again. I am tired of telling Lena to call me Igor but it’s no help.
– You have already accepted an invitation? From whom? Why didn’t you tell me? – asked Lucia not believing it.
– How come you were already invited if no one knows about the party yet? – Cláudio asked, leaving me very excited.
It’s impossible that Lena had already been invited... And therefore, technically, she didn’t turn me down. She only had found an excuse not to go with me which still is clearly not a rejection.
Lena snorted in rage, gave Cláudio and Lu a deadly look and left stamping her feet.
Do I need to say I spent the whole week trying to convince her in all ways possible to go with me? I don’t think so!
When Friday morning came, together with Daniel, Cláudio brought up the subject once again:
– Did you already give up on Lena? – he asked while he watched and laughed of Vagner’s lame joke.
– No! – I answered bored.
– Great... I had a wonderful idea worthy of Cláudio Costa – he disclosed all full of himself.
– And there we go for another egocentrism session – criticized Daniel.
– I’m only telling the truth... What can I do if I am perfect? – asked Cláudio looking at himself reflected in the spoon.
– Stop admiring yourself and tell the plan – I asked bored.
– It’s simple! Tell her that, if she accepts your invitation, you will never disturb her again after the party.
– No way! – I emphatically rejected it, calling the girls’ attention.
– What happened? – asked Lucia seeing me annoyed and looking at Cláudio without getting a clue.
– Don’t bother... – asked Daniel to the girls that went back talking about dresses. – I had an even better one – he told me looking at my frustration face.
– I really hope is a better one. The party is tomorrow – I said fearful.
– Did anyone tell you Helena accepted to go with Fagundes? – Vagner asked me coming closer to listen to the conversation. Soon, Vagner was nearly being choked while Cláudio and Daniel tried to pull me off from him.
– Let him go! – Lena asked worried.
I let him go at that very moment but I was still really mad.
– You didn’t need to remember him about that – Cláudio complained to Vagner.
– But what is your idea? – I asked Daniel while we were on our way to the university that was about a block from there.
– Idea for what? – my sunshine asked curiously while listening to our conversation.
– Perfect. Then I tell you both at the same time. I had an idea that will help both of you – he told us smiling.
– Spit it out! – demanded the little one pulling Daniel by the arm.
– Calm down, Lena... You don’t even wanna know on what it will help you? – Cláudio asked in a discrete laugh.
She seemed thoughtful but Daniel didn’t give her the chance to answer.
– Lena, I propose you get rid of Igor disturbing you forever!
– Really? – Lena asked smiling in dazzle.
– What? – I asked outraged. I thought Daniel would help me be with her not to push me away from her.
– Sure. And I propose Igor to have the chance to have Lena in your arms.
We had reversed roles. I screamed a ‘Really?’ all excited and Lena screamed outraged: ‘What?’ That being said, Cláudio and Lucia were laughing at us and Vagner, who hadn’t followed the conversation because he was looking for the toast he had lost, didn’t understand a thing.
– You’d better explain it right... – Daniel told us both after recovering from the laugh attack.
– I agree... – I said crossing my arms.
– I propose a bet between you two. It’s going to be all or nothing – he explained but even then I didn’t understand the idea behind it.
– What kind of bet? – asked Helena raising an eyebrow and very suspicious which was very normal. She is always suspicious about everything.
– You, Lena, will treat Igor like a good friend calling him by his first name going with him to the party tomorrow, being nice and caring as you are with everybody, and going out with him today in free periods to chat as you do with me and Cláudio.
– No way! – she replied annoyed and crossing arms not noticing she had just imitated me. See how perfect she is for me? She even likes imitating me.
I quite liked the proposal.
– You didn’t let me finish... – Daniel said patiently. – You will do all of this and Igor will promise that he won’t take advantage of your good will, he won’t try to kiss you or anything like that... – he continued.
I didn’t like it... How am I going to get her then? Alright, I am tired of pulling her in the hallways of the university and in the residence to steat non-corresponded kisses but this is the only weapon I have against her pride, isn’t it?
– I didn’t like it! – I said now feeling grumpy while Lena seemed to consider the idea.
– I didn’t finish! – said Daniel once again.
– And where is the bet? What is the purpose of all this? How do I get rid of this pain? – Lena asked confused.
– The fun is in the other part... With you both complying with the agreement, Igor will have from the minute you both agree to the last minute of the party to convince you that he is the right one for you. If he does, well... You stay together and Igor wins. In case he doesn’t, he promises he will never speak to you again and, thus, you get rid of him. What do you think?
– No way... I’ve been trying to please this woman and convince her that she loves me for more than two years. I have almost no chance to get this in 24 hours! – I argued angry.
The price is too high. Imagine if I lose her! What will be of my life without Lena?
– There is no chance that Cintra will win it. Everybody knows it... – Lena said with an expression I would not know how to read. I think she was confuse, surprise and happy, all at the same time.
– If there are no chances of him winning, then it means you accept the bet. Do you bet that is impossible for him to win your heart in such short time? – Daniel asked smiling.
– Of course I doubt so. And even though the proposal is tempting for getting rid of Cintra would be really good, I already have someone to go to the party with – Lena answered looking as trying to evade the subject, looking to both sides distracted.
– Just tell him you won’t go with him, Lena. Think well... Getting rid of Igor calling you sunshine and trying to kiss you in all corners of the city... – I can’t believe Daniel is proposing this!
Lena seemed to consider the idea. I was observing her in shock until Daniel turned and said:
– What about you, Igor? You always tell me that Lena loves you but won’t admit it. It’s not that easy to make her admit that she loves you or kiss you by free will once in a lifetime. And if she does, it´s more than obvious that you two will get along together and you finally have her as your girlfriend.
– You don’t get it, Daniel. What if I lose?! – I screamed annoyed. – What is going to be of my life if I can never speak to my sunshine again?
Definitively, that was not the best idea in the world. Lena is too stubborn to admit she loves me.
I know she loves my stolen kisses and only hits me to play hard to get or for me to think she didn’t like it; just as I know she would miss it if I stopped looking for her but she would never admit it, not ever to Lucia and even less to me.
I went to the class angry and sat alone in the first desk in the room.
Soon everyone arrived and Lu sat with me. She was looking at
me at all times until I got sick of it and asked in a rude manner:
– What?!
– Do you love Lena so much at the point you won’t risk not being able to listening to her yelling at you everyday? – she asked me with a shrink face.
– You don’t get it, Lu. Imagine losing the person you love the most in life because she has no courage to admit that she loves you too – I said in a hurtful tone.
– We know she loves you, Igor. And that is what Daniel thinks you should use in your defense. Make Lena see the Igor Cintra’s side she refuses to face. Make Lena remember that having your friendship is very good and that she will miss you. Make Lena see that you are not the one chasing girls but being chased by them. Make Lena believe you’ve changed for her. Make her see with her own eyes that being by your side is all that see needs, that your dreams are complete together and that in life you have to take risks to be happy. Show who really is the Igor Cintra that we all know and show her how much you love and respect her. Be yourself and stop, at least for one day, to try to impress her and only be her friend.
What a profound speech! I think I spent the rest of the class thinking about those words.
Soon, the class was over and I saw myself alone in the room thinking about what Lu had said. The professor was the one that woke me up.
– The class is over, Cintra. You can go now – she said harshly seeing the next students waiting for me to leave the room so they could get in.
When I arrived to the next class, I was sure my friends had planned it all. The only free spot was beside my sunshine. I took a deep breath and got closer.
– May I? – I asked pointing to the chair next to her.
She nodded slightly and I didn’t waste the chance to seat.
The professor started talking about how to see possible diseases through family genetics and I was lost in thoughts for the third time in the day.
– Cintra! – I went back to reality when I heard Lena’s voice calling me out. – We need to do the exercise – she said calmly observing me.
– I am sorry! – I said recomposing and paying attention to what she was saying about diseases.
